External Doctorate In an external doctorate, you are employed either by a non-university research institution (for instance a Max Planck Institute or a Helmholtz Center) or a company. Academic support is provided by TUM, which has the right to award the doctorate.

External PhD candidates External PhD candidates are not employed by the university. As an external PhD candidate you conduct or have conducted your research at an institute outside the university, but you do receive guidance from a supervisor in Wageningen. You will not be required to pay fees and are not entitled to an education budget.

If you have a specific topic in mind and would like to purse a PhD in it (as an external candidate), you must in most cases write a research proposal and seek contact with a professor you deem suitable to supervise your PhD research.

External candidates. PhD candidates admitted to PhD programmes at other institutions are welcome to take PhD courses at BI. Apply for PhD courses. Enrolment in a PhD programme is a general requirement for participation in PhD courses at BI Norwegian Business School. We therefore ask that you attach confirmation of enrolment in a PhD programme.

Doctor of Philosophy The degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is the University's principal research degree for graduate students and is available in all faculties and departments. A Cambridge PhD is intellectually demanding and you will need to have a high level of attainment and motivation to pursue this programme of advanced study and research.

External PhD candidates who are interested can mail their CV and research proposal to the relevant section of one of the departments. PhD candidates from abroad A PhD candidate from abroad with a research grant (from the country of origin or obtained through NUFFIC) can follow a PhD trajectory under tutorship of a faculty professor who agrees to the guidance of the candidate.
